Saleema Noon- Talk Sex Today workshops

Talk Sex Today.

Body Science Boot Camp for Parents

Parenthood never arrives with a rulebook, and when it comes to explaining the world of sexual health to your child, it can be hard not to end up a bright shade of red. Using humour and straight talk in an open, interactive environment, Saleema Noon Sexual Health Educators will show you how easy it is to convey healthy, positive messages about sexual health to kids.

In this workshop parents will learn:

• Why we need to talk to children about sexual health at a young age
• How to reduce risk of child sexual abuse
• What children should know at each stage of development, with specific examples of how to explain concepts and processes
• How to become their kids’ preferred source of sexual health information
• How to normalize open, honest sexual health conversations in their family
• How to effectively answer even the toughest questions kids ask
• What will be covered in Body Science workshops for students

When:  Feb 27, 2024 (via zoom)

Time:  6:30 PM Pacific Time (US and Canada)

Zoom Link will be emailed out to parents closer to the event

Helping kids cope with media coverage of war and other traumatic events

The intense media coverage that accompanies traumatic events, such as war, violence in schools, acts of terrorism and natural disasters, can be very disturbing for children and teens.

Certain young people may be particularly vulnerable, and more sensitive children can be seriously distressed simply by watching TV, YouTube or TikTok replays of current events that have made recent headlines.
Parents, educators, health practitioners and others who work with kids can help lessen anxieties arising from the coverage of these challenging events by using the following tips prepared by MediaSmarts and Dr. Arlette Lefebvre, Staff Psychiatrist, Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, ON.

Virtual Mentoring for Students

Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver is dedicated to the ongoing support and mentorship of children in our community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they've continued to provide support to children and youth through mentorship.

Having an additional caring adult in a child’s life can build their confidence, encourage the growth of peer connections, and help prevent issues like bullying or peer pressure.

Their Site Based programs, typically offered in schools and community spaces, are now virtual and they support male, female, transgender, and non-binary students to meet with a volunteer mentor online from home.

Their Community Big Brothers program for male-identifying, gender-fluid, and non-binary youth 7-14, is supporting both in-person and virtual meetings.

Resources from Merlyn Horton - Speaker from SOLOS

Merlyn Horton’s highly informative presentation gave parents thought provoking insights on how children of all ages are engaging on social media without fully understanding cyber security and safety, and the impact posted pictures or videos could have on their lives.

She highlighted the increasing rate at which young children are participating in online searches, and joining the world of online gaming, without knowing what is age appropriate.

She concluded that although children do receive some online education at school, e.g. how to prevent cyber abuse/bullying, it has become essential that parents and guardians have chats with their children about online safety and how security options work (or don’t work) on sites which their children have gained access.

In our era of rapidly changing digital technology, she added that it's advisable to create a set of guidelines and family values for your children and teens in regards to the usage of tablets, smart phones and computers. Even if they don't have their own device(s) yet, they'll likely be sharing a friend's/family member's equipment sooner than later.

This Wednesday evening session was followed up on Thursday with workshops for Grade 4 to 7 students.

Online Resources and Reports gathered by Merlyn, can be found at: http://bit.ly/dVSsoJ
